Default rear light question....

So next issue, bike runs like a CHAMP... but

The wiring previous owner did was horrable, in the picture you can see this connecter jobby comming off the main wiring deal. i assume its for the tail lights as he had a hot and a negative jammed into it and taped.

i removed those and my question is, is there some kind of connecter i can get to plug into there ? im trying to figure out how to have a tail light with both running and brake lights.. it only had break lights befor i tore it apart, sorry wiring is my weak spot, im terrable with anything electrical..

Thanks in advance!

There should be a blue wire running into the connector from the LIGHTS circuit breaker. This comes out as a green wire and powers the tail light. A pair of red wires [one from each brake lite switch] going in come out as a single red which powers the brake light.

That looks like a six socket connector, part number 72037-71. The mate would be the six pin connector 72041-71. The pins are 72038-71; the sockets are 71039-71. There are pictures of these in the parts catalog 99451-78B.

Here is some additional info posted by a member on another forum ...

Harley pins & sockets are for AMP Mate-N-Lock commercial connectors. The pins for commercial connectors are different than the ones for universal Mate-N-Lock connectors. The dealer gets .80 ea for the sockets & .45 ea for the pins. You can get them for .10 ea from Carlton-Betts. The Carlton-Betts P/N's are P/N 60620-1 for the pins and 60619-1 for the sockets.

The factory crimp is called a "B" crimp. Great Plains Electronics sells a crimping tool that will crimp the wire and the insulation with a "B" crimp for around $30.
