Bendix carb tuning
I got a 78 with a bendix carb and ultima electronic ignition. I set the jets at 1.5 for slow and 4 out for main to start. I am getting some popping out of the carb from time to time...so its to lean correct. So I gave it some more fuel. I am still getting some pops from carb and the plugs look rich so what am I Doing wrong ? The bike idles good and when I run up thru the gears it seems to run good. Any advice would be great.
Thanks

So I followed all instructions on tuning posted by PG read all of the post here and on the other XL forum recomened form Mick. Still getting a pop out of the carb. Just went for a 300 mile round trip ride and the old sled ran great but would still pop every now and then so what gives? I used to have the fuel line from the petcock dropping down under the carb and then to the inlet never had a pop. Now I have a 90 degree petcock and the fuel line goes almost straight in with the inline filter. Would this make a diff ? Also the clear filter some times is full and sometimes not.
Thanks for any input

Also, is the in-line filter a motorcycle specific filter, and is it designed specifically for gravity flow? There have been many instances of fuel flow being restricted when using an automotive fuel filter designed for vehicles with a fuel pump.

Pop through carburetor
To check for manifold leaks remove spark plug and screw in a hose to attach an air compressor, block carburetor filter end and pressurize slightly., now spray manifold joints and carburetor with soap and water to find vacuum leaks.Float setting and action is crital .

The above post contains much incorrect advice. To check for manifold leaks, read the following thread before considering the advice given in the above post...
