77 xlt oil hoses

Ok I am well into the re assembly but I can't remember the oil line connection. Bottom of the tank goes to the oil pump. Scavange from the pump goes to the oil cooler. oil cooler return goes to the 3/8 fitting near thetop of the tank, I think. where does the 1/4 fitting at the neck of the tank go?:icon_confused:

The 1/4" fitting at the top of the tank is the oil tank vent. The line runs to a fitting on the rear edge of the gearcase [cam] cover. This PhotoBucket album, contains closeup pics of the oil line routing on my 1978 - sane as your 1977. I also run an oil cooler ...

geez Mick you are a lifesaver. Did you just take those pics or do you have a library? Your Sporty sure is nice...

I made those pics a few years ago when i finally figured out how to run them, especially the way the return line, tank vent line, and starter motor cable run under the starter motor. If they are not run [u]exactly[/] the way i have them in the pic i cannot get the starter motor installed.

shouldn't the return line be run under the motor/ transmission and up behind the chain?

It is.

Note that the return line must be well zip tied to the frame tube to keep both itself and that feed line away from the sprocket. Not much clearance there at all.

This is the factory way to run the lines. There is a simpler way avoiding the mess under the starter motor. Next time i run these i will investigate that way.

we run them under the starter its cleaner and they are ( slightly )flattened, BUT i have been doing it that way forever and not seen any affect that causes a problem with the oiling system - i dont have a picture and the iron engine we are doing in the shop right now is too far away from this to help -- jz

Mick do you happen to have any pics of the wire harness along the top frame? I t would save me some trial and error.

IronMick 04-08-2013 05:28 AM

Sorry, no pics.

The main harness comes out of the headlite bucket on the left side and runs along the left side/underneath the backbone. It must be loose enough between the headlite and the first zip tie to allow full turn of the bars to the right. I place the 1st zip tie about 1/3 of the way along, not too close to the front. I tuck it under the gas tank as best i can.
