Question 75 Ironhead Oil Line?

I have this oil line from my 1975 Iron head engine. It was bolted on the engine under the oil tank which is the big square kick start only tank. I want to know if there is something else that attaches to this line as it has threads for another fitting on it but it did not have anything connected to it. Please help me out with what it is and where it should connect up to. I changed the bike over to have an electric starter plus the kick start too so I need to move it as it interferes with the solenoid when I go to bolt the starter unit in place so I took this line off to get the starter mounted up and now I need to know if I can extend this line to bolt it up elsewhere on the bike.

It looks like the automatic chain oiler.

I have not had one on either of my IronHeads and have not seen one, but i have seen pictures from time to time and that is what it looks like. There are no other similar oil lines on the bike.

It is most common to remove it and plug the hole. It attaches to the case behind the sprocket cover.

OK thanks for the information. I figured it was a vent but what your saying sounds correct that it is an oiler for the chain. I will just leave it off and plug the hole that it was attached to. I will just use the two lines left to hook up my new side tank when I find one for it. I still need that side oil tank and a battery tray & bigger battery for it then it will be road ready. One other guy locally said I will need a larger regulator since I put the electric starter on it so I am looking into that item also.

I am not familiar with the early mechanical regulators, just with the newer solid state/electronic ones. Any of these will do, the ones for 1978 to early 1984.

If you do go with a mechanical regulator, yes you will need the larger 3-coil regulator for the larger e-start battery, otherwise the big battery will suck too much amperage out of the generator and overheat it. (the third coil in the big reg is current/amps regulation.)

Your side oil tank will have three lines to it, the supply, return and the smaller vent line to the fitting on the back of the cam gear case near the rear cylinder base area.

X3 on the chain oiler, I found out when I went to change the oil tank hoses. I closed it up all the way but left it there. My buddy who had three of these Ironheads said they never worked right and made a mess!

the Bosch regs work great, ran one for awhile before I got my poweraythor, you can get em on egay pretty cheap, on these apps I liked the mech regs better than the solid states, got 3 bad, out of the box, and bought the Bosch and was much happier

Ya, they make a mess! I went with chrome chain with o-rings. I spray it with white lithium grease occasionally and I plugged the hole in the case. Had good luck so far.
