The chrome on my rocker boxes is crap. Can I sand blast the remaining chrome off and maybe put some kind of clear coat on them? maybe even paint? Looking for ideas/suggestions. Don't think I want to re-chrome.
They were never chrome from the factory. Obviously a cheapo chrome job by a PO.
I am not familiar with the best methods to remove it, just that sand is a definite no. Perhaps soda blasting or some other media that will bring back the original aluminum without harming it as would sand. Others will know what to use.
chrome is put on with a positive electrical charge in a bath
all plating companys provide the service of removing the plating it is done with a type of acid and running a neg charge from a car ( like ) alternator not expensive to have done
Heard muriatic acid works. Guess not.... Now searching for new ones...LOL
Got my new boxes and glass beaded them, put on three coats of VHT high temp satin clear. I will bake them tomorrow. I like how they came out. Thinking I will sand the edge of the vins on the jugs to match.
The acid thing really didn't work too well. Here are a couple photos.
Out of the acid, one on the left was glass beaded, the one on the right is just muriatic acid.
