New V Twin in the Pan , Street, Custom
Ok so It seems ( Visualy ) that the Pan American, Street Fighter, And custom all share the same new engine. Now of course all would have different carataristics do to each its own application, But anyone know the design, testing here or in europe. I mean Is it just a punched out street 500 / 750 with a bigger radiator Not sure if Harley’s ready for another M8 debacle. But due to their track record of new donk’s, I’d pass on all of these till they get their shit sorted with the 8 Wiz Out Man 🤘 |
I don't think anyone that really knows would be posting about it in this forum.
From what Harley marketing information I have read is that the engine is all new, it is modular and comes in different sizes from 500cc to 1250cc. Now my thinking that is a huge range of engine size to share components. Either the 500cc bikes are going to be way overbuilt and heavy (but they'll run forever) or the 1250 bikes are going to grenade way too soon. But I don't think it will be as simple as buying a 500cc bike and slapping a set of 1250 jugs on it like you can do with an 883cc Sportster. |
They've announced that there will be four displacements: 500, 750, 975 and 1250. They've announced that it's a water-cooled v-twin, and I think they even announced that it was going to be 60 degrees.
They already have an all-new, water-cooled 60-degree V-twin in 500 and 750 displacements. What possible reason would they have to abandon that and re-engineer an all-new water-cooled v-twin at 60 degrees? So -- why wouldn't the engine for the new bikes be a version of the Revolution X? |

M8 debacle? Um... have you actually ridden an M8 engined bike?
Plenty of torque, effortless power found the windshield too high and the bike was way heavy for my liking. But just to clarify !!!! This wasnt one of those sumping stage 4’s mothership is still dealing with. Thanks for asking cheers Wiz 🍻 |

Stage 4 sumping is way overhyped and effects like .02% of the bikes out there. That is hardly a "debacle".
Maybe you need to pop over to the M8 thread and tell all those guys that spent 30K + on a M8 powered scoot , It’s all in their minds 🤪 My old air cooled 17 floppa dunga 1200 custom looks pretty good right now. Thanks for your concern Wiz Out 🍻 |

From the photos they have released to date it looks to be a modified version of the Revolution X engine. It appears to have a 4 valve dual overhead cam setup very similar to the heads that showed up on the AMA Flat track bike this last season. So with the new heads I'm sure marketing will be calling it a new engine as that sounds better than just a warmed over old engine that was way under powered in the 500 and 750 version when you stacked it up against the competitors offerings.

If you're comparing to 650-750cc sport bikes, then yeah there's no comparison at all. The revised version of the Revolution X in the Street Rod is decent, it makes around 95 hp/liter... But the biggest problem performance wise IMO is the extreme pork. They've got to get weight competitive. The Street 500 is over 500 lbs! A 500+ pound 500cc isn't going to be competitive against anything. As long as Harley stays wedded to only ever considering a V-twin design, they're going to give up HP to the competition. |
