m8 oil change - yeah Im back
So Im back .. on a 17 Ultra limited.
On my second oil change 2200 on the bike.
Ill say right now, Im no mechanic. But I do basic service on my 3 cars, 1 suv, another bike VTX, and mowers. Might be missing a thing or two.
Im writing today for 2 reasons they are :
1. Harley charged me $4.23 for 2 o rings. Ridiculous. I bought 20 on ebay for $1.69 plus .47 shipping. 111105 is the Harley part number.
I will be further investigating to find out what exactly the size of the ring is and I will be posting. I thought I read when I had the 2016 Ultra that it was 9mm. But I will be confirming that and ordering them in mass. For some reason this information isn't easy to come by. Maybe I haven't been looking hard enough.
2. I believe everyone who has a Rushmore or M8 should add this step to their oil changing procedure. As I wiped down the entire under side of the bike, I noticed that there was a small bead of oil on the black plastic cover just behind the front wheel. If I'm not mistaken it covers the water pump. I pulled that black plastic cover off to find that the bottom inside of the cover was covered with oil worse yet, the connectors that it protects were covered with oil. I do stuff paper towels at the low points, use that Harley drain thing that coincidentally doesn't work all that great and I use a zip lock bag to pull off the filter. Oil on the cover is no big thing but on the connectors is definitely a recipe for failure. So ... from now on, before I start, I will be taking that cover off. This will allow excess oil to drip to the floor and will remind me to clean up residual.

Harley has a new oil filter drain funnel for the M8's that fits better, and you can buy the $6 gasket kit which consists of 3 drain plug O rings and the Derby Cover O Ring for the Primary...Harley oil changes have always been messy, nothing new..have to be creative to minimize it, no eliminating it

As far as the o-rings go, I use these from McMaster
1201T24 Mil-R-83248C Chemical-Resist Viton(R) O-Ring Dash Number 013, Packs of 50
They cost $8 per 50 so they aren't the cheapest option out there, but they are full mil spec and rated for engine oil.
The 013 rings are exact dimension matches for the harley o-rings. The different price points out there are mostly for mil spec ratings and what fluid(s) they're rated for.
Having said that the new service manual tells you to reuse the o-rings if they aren't damaged, as well as to reuse the derby cover o-ring gasket. This is a pretty major change in wording from the '15 and the '16 service manuals. FWIW - I still change the plug o-rings every time just for peace of mind. I don't replace the derby gasket unless I have to.
