Default 500 mile oil change

How many have opted for changing engine oil after 500 miles as opposed to waiting for the 1000 mile service ? I'm not suggesting taking it to the dealer for this, but was thinking of oil & filter change at home !

At Dealers behest, I had my 1st oil change done at 1500 km, "not before", by them. FWIW

I did not do a 500 as I did not see the point. I waited for the 1000 and let the dealer do it just as I have done on every other HD. My protocol has been to pony up the $250+ and let the dealer do the first service at 1000 miles then I do them after that

If it takes somebody to get 500 miles a whole 12 months then I would say yes it is useful.

No worries then, 1K it is then. My Vw transporter is on what they call "Long Life Service" the 1st oil change was at 25K which to me seems crazy !

You will get answers from across the entire spectrum of opinions. I did an oil & filter change at just under 400 miles. Worth it? Who cares, it didn't cost me much and I wanted whatever initial wear particles there may have been out of there. That and I wanted a second application of conventional oil to finish the factory designated break in period before I switch to full synthetic. I'm actually at 1200 miles and am getting ready to drain it and go with Mobil1 V-Twin 20w50.

.

Personally, though I didn't do a 500 mi change, I've changed religiously every 5000 km (3000 mi) since then, even though I use a synthetic. My frequent changes are predicated on one thing but for me its a biggie; "If your magical, indestructible, nothing can go wrong now, oil falls short for some bizarre reason, an oil change will always make up for it. If a few bucks tossed isn't helping my engine any, its doing wonders for my piece of mind.

Used MC oil comes out almost as clean looking as when it went in. Used Red Line 20/50 oil will go into my lawnmower next summer and I dare say will be better for it than the 30w Dino they specify for it.
