17 Road Glide Rear Wheel Heat
 

Last week did a Daytona run comming back home got a flat a mile away from home. Limbed it home the rear wheel was so hot could not touch it. The next morning did a inspection no tire damage but the shreader valve would leak every time i moved it. Since it is rubber just wonder if the heat from the exhaust caused this problem. I know the catatic converter was moved back by the tire. I use a TMPS called Fobo little sensor that screw on the Valve stems works with my iPhone. This gives a tire pressure and temps. My rear is always 30 degrees higher that the front. Its not even hot yet worrying about when the heat gets here.

This is my first Harley comming off a Goldwing never had these heat issue.

Friction causes heat- flat tire causes a huge increase in contact patch, and friction, elevating temps way beyond normal. That kind of pressure/side loading ( from driving on a flat tire) could separate the cords- I'd throw that tire away! The valve stem isn't designed to have anything on it other than the little plastic cap- your sensor has enough weight that it's distorting the stems ability to seal, inducing a hazzard! Get a new tire mounted, and put the FOBO on the shelf- get it off of the wheel before you get hurt.

In short, the FOBO is known to damage the stem - creates a hole.

Get the metal stems and replace the tire...

I have been using Fobo your 6 years now with the steel tee valve stems no problems at all. Just didn't take the time to change the stems. I brought the wheel to my harley Dealer they inspected the tire and installed a new steel tee valve on the wheel. I too believe the sensor had something mat have weaken the rubber stem. But still a little concerned about the heat comming from motor and exhaust on the tire.

Not so sure I am believing the heat from the pipes got your tire hot. When you run a tire with low air pressure they will get hot. You ever see a tire on a semi on fire when going down the freeway? Usually it's from driving down the road not knowing it's flat.

Tire pressure were good thats why i use the FoBo system gives me tire pressures and temps. I was just thinking since they moved the cat converter to the rear closer to the tire things are going to get hotter back there. In my case with the fobo censer on the rubber valve plus the heat caused it to weaken.

There is no way the exhaust system caused the tire to overheat to the point of failure.
Like it or not the tire had lost pressure and run long enough with excessive heat buildup to ruin it
Get rid of the do-dad tire monitors as obviously they let you down...at least once.
