Default New bike purchase - questions

Thinking about a new bike and wondering about mods. Since all new bikes have catalytic converters, are there exhaust choices available, even in California? I know on the older bikes it's really not an issue, just get whatever you want and you're set.
Also, been reading about horror stories with motor problems, etc. Is this a major concern? Better to buy an older (2013-2015) bike?

And, are the 2016s much different than the 2017s?

The M8 is a beast. Even stock set up to Cali standards. After market selections are increasing everyday.

I thought my Rushmore Road King was great, until....I can't believe how much more enjoyable my 2017 is..amazing difference to me considering the only differences are engine, clutch and suspension but it's astoundingly better imo

You can go on any forum, for any motorcycle brand and model, and read horror stories of new models. Once in a great while they pan out as epidemic but for the most part they are a small fraction of owners having issues. If you think logically, there is no way Harley would jeopardize their famous FL chassis series bikes by installing a problematic engine into the entire line, that would be catastrophic. Also, if they had even an inkling about engines grenading, they'd not be discounting the heck out of remaining 2016 models with the 103 engine to get them out the door. If you want a deal, they certainly are there and the 103 is decent, but it's not an M8.

The additional power and significantly reduced vibration of the 107 engine makes it a no-brainer on which to buy.

You can pull the cats if you want, but you won't need to do so for power. Running clean with good tone and plenty of performance is not a bad thing.

Like drcollie said, you can find doom and gloom just about everywhere. The M8 is a great engine. Combine that with the upgraded suspension, and you have one killer bike. So to address your question directly, IMO, there is no comparison between the 103 and the 107. Hands-down, I recommend the M8 over the 103's.

Good luck.
