Mine was losing about half a quart per 5,000 miles but since I passed 10K it's either eating a lot less or none at all now.

By the way, ymmv but my local dealership told me that Harley Davidson wouldn't address any oil consumption problems unless the bike was using more than 1 qt per 1,000 miles. Anything less than that was considered "within acceptable limits."

Oh and also, by the way, "one dot" on the dipstick represents approx. 3 oz of oil

From what I recall, back in the days when car engines tended to burn more oil, that was the magic rate of tolerance in the warranty. But, I really wouldn't want any of my motors to use that much. As a comparison...oil consumption via bad valve seals was the root cause of engine failures in Vegas. The oil level would go down, due to leakage around the valve seals. Then if the owner didn't keep up with adding oil, the cylinder walls would score...then it would really burn oil more rapidly...leading to more damage due to low oil. BTW, by checking the oil level in my 1974 Vega regularly, I got 105,000 miles on it with no engine work. Too bad the entire body rusted off in upstate New York.

There ya' have it! 2017 Harley Street Glide and 1974 Chevy Vega, same thing only different! but yeah, be patient, mine stabilized after a few thousand miles, wife's Freewheeler is still thirsty after 7000 miles and the stock filter is pretty oiled up..I honestly think mine stabilized about the time I had the SE Stage 1 with SE Hi Flow and dyno tune done ..the breather tubes are much larger than OEM and I haven't noticed much at all breather goop in the TB..just runs much more efficiently..I'm at 9000 miles now..recently returned from a 1500 mile trip & it didn't consume any oil..just let things settle in and find the sweet spot level wise where it stops 'rejecting' it

Default m8 using oil

I run my oil 3 dots down hot and 5 dots down cold. I have oil in air box and in the throttle body. Could this have maybe caused the rings not to seat when new?have 3000 mi on bike now and it still uses some oil which is in the intake. Seems like a ring issue to me but i am old school. Thanks. Dennis

i doubt it if you broke it in properly..give it some time..mine took several thousand miles to settle in, surprisingly even more settled with the SE Hi Flow AC..you're keeping the level correct and what you're describing is not out of the ordinary for Harley in general

Default Low 1quart

Did my first oil change at 1400 miles, my M8 was low 1 quart of oil and the transmission was reading way below low. Around 500 miles I installed Vance and Hines power duels, rineharts amd FP3, according to the settlement agreement Harley signed with the department of justice I voided my warranty by remapping the bike and installing power duels, therefore I skipped the $500 first service and changed all the fluids myself with synthetic for $66.00 including oil filter.
