Default 2017 M8 Oil consumption

My 2017 Ultra Limited now has 4160 miles on it. Last oil change was done at 1050 miles by the dealer. Just recently while out on a ride I heard noises at idle I had not heard previously that concerned me. We stopped and I checked the oil only to find it was a quart low so added a quart and all good then. I have thoroughly checked the underside an did not find any seepage or wet spots and there has never been any oil dripped on my garage floor. I am thinking A> blowby into the breathers? and B>this is not normal or expected.

Has anyone here with a 2017 M8 experienced anything similar before I go pick a fight with the service dept?

There is an M8 section. You may want to post this over there.

I do not own an M8 but have owned three touring bikes with the 96 and 103. None have used any oil between scheduled changes.

It's under warranty. Go talk with your dealer.

Did you check the oil level after it was returned from the dealer?

I experienced the same thing and it turned out I had a blown seal between the crank and primary. My quart of oil was in the primary. Check the oil level in the trans and primary. Now, my bike was one of the first to leave the line so depending on your build date they may have already put in the better seal. The other oil levels should tell you if you have a problem like mine.

I've got 15K on mine and it eats about 0.3 qts per 1,000 miles. I'm not really happy about that - its a lot more than my twinkie ever ate - but the service manager at my dealership (and two others I checked) all told me that anything less than 1 full qt per 1,000 miles is considered "acceptable."

Do with that what you will, but If I was going take my bike in for warranty maintenance I'd probably tell them I was losing a quart every 1,000 miles.

JT - Reynoldsburg, OH... I asked AD Farrow dealerships, Finks in Zanesville, and Adventure H-D up in Dover

I'm in the same boat as you. I have 4,060 miles on my 17 SGS and am down a quart. The dealer performed the 1,000 mile service at ~ 1.100 miles. I know there's some blowby as I have my crankcase breather terminating into a catch can, but can't imagine it's a quart worth of oil.

latest consumption was using about 1/4 qt each in both our M8's in ~2K miles, in HOT and high speed conditions so guess I can deal with that..like RJ said..not happy about it because my previous Harley's never consumed that much..oh well, is what it is..carry a qt on long trips

I'm having the same issue. Dealer did oil change at 1000 miles at 3000 checked the level and it was a quart low. Brought to the dealer and they stated that was normal. Did oil change myself at 6000 total miles. After putting about 3000 miles it was a quart low again. Been running amsoil. Could have something to do with the rings not seating with synthetic oil.

Same thing happened to me, no consumption up to the 1K service then lost a qt between 1100-2300 miles, I noticed it getting a bit more rattly too. It's now done 2800 miles & sitting at 2 marks below F when hot. No signs of leakage anywhere & I pulled the a/c expecting to see signs there but it was all good ??

Maybe I should take the derby cover off & see if anything flows out !

No loss of transmission fluid over the 2800 miles !

Almost 11k miles on mine and it doesn't burn any oil. Level stays the same between changes.
