Default Question on Range and Low Fuel

A couple of times I have pushed the fuel on the tank to see what level you reach the low fuel warning on a 17 RGU. The warning comes on around with 40 miles left on the range. Once I've taken it down to 5 miles left before filling and the most I've put in is 5.1 gallons. This is supposed to be a 6 gallon tank.

Does the warning come on early and range get you down to the reserve rather than an empty tank? Not really too worried since both times I'm sitting at 230 to 250 miles on the tank already but would like to see what others have seen.

That's pretty close to my experience as well.

The plus side for me is that I feel pretty safe running it all the way to empty and zero miles remaining

I read somewhere that the fuel gauge sending unit and fuel pump occupy about a 1/2 gallon of capacity. So it's probably down to around 5.5 gallons.

Same experience here.
just keep in mind unless you drill a hike in the plastic filler neck just below the tank top, you won't be able to put in 6 whole gallons. It's about 5.6 at the most you can fill it due to the air gap that the plastic neck provides.

I have managed to get 5.45 gallons into mine but I need to burp it the last .25 gals.

Rock her side to side and fill it a little more, it takes awhile but you can top her off.

I filled mine up today. 200.8 miles, 5.61 gal, 35.79 mpg showed 5 miles left on the tank. Yeah I've been riding it on the hard side. That was filled up into the air gap well no burp. Before the cam went in and the head pipe decat. I ran mine completely out once. I think it was 25 miles or so past the -0- mark.

That's an interesting question. I had my 2012 SG on the Blue Ridge Parkway 2 months ago , middle of nowhere, got low , light came on . I got off the only exit nearby, set me back 1 hour,20 min. And it only took 5.25 gallons. My Luck, back on the BRP went by the only gas station (not shown on any maps) on the Parkway just another 30 miles ! I know this won't happen, but wouldn't it be Great if HD increased the Tank to 7 Gallons ?

I'm sure some folks would want a 7 gallon tank but not me. I'm usually ready to stretch my legs a bit before the tank is reading empty. Plus, the bike is heavy enough as it is, I don't want to be adding any more, especially high up on the spine of the frame.

I like the extra range of the 6 gallon, but I liked the looks of the 5 gallon better.
