K&N Air Filter for M8
#41
Only if the OEM filter restricts airflow by design. Otherwise, it wouldn't matter if you had a .5 sq ft filter surface area or a 10 sq ft filter surface area. The intake manifold is only so big, and as long as it gets enough air on demand it won't matter.

there's some truth to that within reason..adding the K&N OEM 1717 replacement should be just fine..when you think about it..there's probably a significant difference in air flow between a new clean filter and one approaching its service need so of course there's some ability to adjust..However, I don't personally believe it's wise at all to add less restrictive exhaust coupled with increased intake, you risk exceeding threshold of safe engine operation.
so you either trust HD or you subscribe to the FOS conspiracy theory that they just want to sell you more unnecessary products.
I subscribe to the former rather than latter mindset of;
ECM requires recalibration when adding performance parts or engine damage can occur
guess it's an individual risk vs reward tolerance of playing it safe and spending the money or roll the dice..frankly it amazes me how some will balk at spending a few hundred bucks to follow the instructions but won't blink an eye at spending the same amount on a piece of bling..we spend 20, 30, even 40 K on these bikes, don't see what the big deal is going by the book

Bought the HD1717 when it came out. The hole for the breater hose was too small, so I returned it. K&N told me they were aware of the issue due to many reviews on the net, and that later production would resolve the problem. Fast forward 5 months...bought one today...same problem. I don't think squeezing the hose through a smaller hole and restricting flow, even a little, can be beneficial. How hard would it be for them to make the the hole in the filter the same size as the o.e.m. HD filter. Just my 2 cents

There is no metal involved. The filter back plate is plastic and has a hole where a single rubber line coming off a tee feeds into the filter. Same as the stock setup. On my K&N the hole wasn't really to small it was more that it had a casting ridge inside the hole. A drill bit by hand was all it needed to chase the hole clean.

I did the same thing. The plastic you're drilling through pulls up on the flutes and doesn't get into the filter. The tube slides right in after that.
