Would it be possible to put 16-inch wheels and softer touring tires (like what was stock on my 2000 Electra Glide Classic) on my '17 Street Glide for a softer ride? The stock tires make the Street Glide handle more like a sports bike, not one for touring. I'll be keeping this '17 and don't want an Ultra. Also not wanting to raise up the frame with any new setup. Anyone attempt this? Thanks in advance for all replies.

Most of the time guys want to go up a size..you want to go a '19' to a '16'. ...By all means go ahead...you will need a new '16' rim with ABS and whatever your heart desires on the tire.....

My suggestion change the tire to a softer one going from 19" to a 16" is not going to make a heck of a big difference.....maybe adjust/change the front shocks.

 

By softer tire you mean higher profile?

Have you tried removing a little air?

Adjusting your shock stiffness?

I agree, seems like a lot of work for so little improvement in ride quality.

I would suggest trying progressive suspension in the front and rear. That's where you'd see the most improvement.

 

I keep the tires at 36 ft,, 40 rear, since I take a passenger often. About how many pounds would you consider a starting point and the absolute limit? Shocks are set at 4. Yes, the touring tires on my 2000 were higher profile, but the wheels were an inch less, at 16", and it had 1" lowering blocks with Ohlins.

 

Your Street Glide should have come with a 16" rear wheel. I have a 2017 Road Glide Special and I put a 17" wheel on the front with a 140/80B-17 Commander II. The rear is 16" with 180/65-16 Commander II. It seems to ride and drive well. The 140 looks huge on the front.

 

I thought I am the only one with this mod. My 2017 Road glide 19” front wheel needs to go. My previous bike 2012 roadking classic has 16” front wheel and it was smooth to ride. I’m doing my research now, I think I can mount a 2012 roadking front wheel on my current bike. The only thing is I cannot use my existing front disc rotors on the 16” wheel. The rotors mount is different. You need to buy a 16” wheel and disc rotors.
I’m on eBay everyday looking for take off.

If you guys think the 16" with a 140 tire rides great. You should try a 18" with a 180 the SGS drives like a caddi.....
