Adding an external tach to a M8 RK
I've been wanting to add a tachometer to my RK that was separate from the speedo. I like seeing it mounted on the handlebar cover like the older RKs used to have. I could probably use a tack that connects to the coil but figured it would be fun to use the CAN bus to get the data. Being a retarded engineer I figured it couldn't be too hard.. Had to spend some time learning about CAN and how it works.
I found a CAN tachometer on speedhut.com and bought one.. They are pretty cheap. $127 delivered. The first attempt at simply plugging it in didn't work.
OK Needed to figure out what HD put out for a tach message and what the tach needed. I bought a cheap can bus analyzer from Microchip and proceeded to figure out what the differences were in the messages.
I happened to to get into a discussion about this stuff with the guy that owns sta-bul.com and he sent me a can bus kit for examination. Tim (TRS Solutions) wrote me a preliminary version of code and I was able to get it working.
During this time I also managed to make a tachometer housing which will mount to the handle bar mount cover.
I still have to make a wiring harness that allows plugging of the tach into the can bus in the headlight. But as you can see in the video, the tach works.
Figuring out what the tach needed.
Adding in the cam message translator.
Here is a quick run of the Tach.
