Question: friend of mine has a 17 SG and the clutch is completely fried at 4,000 miles. He's 68 years old and rides slow, never roasted a tire in his life yet the dealer is claiming he abused it.

is this a warranty item? warranty says they cover everything except perishable /consumable items.. does that include clutch?

Also, he's been to dealer twice complaining that the bike is grinding gears when shifting down from 5th to 6th. It's been in twice for this, now the clutch is gone..... Bike won't register gears on the dash except for neutral.

I'll be the first to say....."They all do that". Seriously, yes I would tell them to fix it. That is what warranty is for.

Sounds to me like the clutch never fully disengages.

Question, has he ever measured the oil level in the primary? And the trans?

Even if a clutch was considered a perishable item....4000 miles is all it gets? Nah I'd be pitching a fit!

Had my dealer tell me about one of his customers that kept frying his clutch. Dealer found out that he had been riding in 4th gear at 25 mph and wondering why his clutch kept burning up. LOL!

Might be the situation with this guy.

It shouldn’t matter if it is. Good dealer would fix it under warranty and help him out if he might be riding wrong by explaining the right way. Some of these ****ing dealers need to just fix the **** and quite worrying about pissing everyone off.

Not bad. Only 7 posts before a guy with a problem is called a liar. It seems any new problem must be approved by the M8 police.

Normally dealers don't cover a clutch as it is a wear item, similar to brakes. At least in my experience. Burning a clutch in that short period of time is rare, unless it is being abused. Don't know if anything else would cause this being a hydraulic clutch, there really isn't much adjustment, its pretty much on and off. Weird
