If you search through the M8 section in here thers an illustration right outta the service manual that shows the proper plug that someone posted up.
Order up a service manual. Boardtracker sells em. Your owners manual may show the correct one for engine oil.
To make the job easier HD sells a proper oil drain pan to slip under the filter to prevent oil from getting all over the motor when you take it off.
Also going to need the correct cap style filter wrench which they also sell.

If you have to ask this question, the procedure is 1) take it to the dealer. Thats it!

Its just that I want to get on with it now as I've just changed out the cam to a RS468 and I want to fire it up. Its evening time here and I can't call up my friendly HD Dealer.

Is it so surprising that the owners manual (link shown above) might show such vital information as the procedure for changing engine oil, primary lubricant and transmission lubricant?
The subject is detailed in the Owners Manual that came with the bike, the online version available from H-D, or the numerous YouTube videos.

Did you not refer to the service manual to change out the cam?

Nope I used Zippers instructions that came with their parts, no problem there. I just thought I would swap it out this evening as I had a bit of time but hadn't thought any further than that.
Thanks for getting me the info so quickly.

3 drain plugs, all for different oil, engine, primary, and tranny. all 5/8", remember the crankcase oil is the only one that sits horizontal. the rest are vertical.

Just incase somebody does a search so they don't have to listen to wiseass answers. Here's a picture. Primary is in bottom of primary cover . Personal I run 3.8 quarts and it's stays put between oil changes so far. But that's just me as I have lot of experance with dry sump motors.

funny thing is, I was told long ago by a very experienced and knowledgeable HD service manager, and he was joking and exaggerating of course, but he said truth is if it had a quart of oil in them it would be enough to provide lubrication by design..but I agree with you..don't need to get it Full, unless you want to oil your AF..only benefit is more oil = less oil temp in theory..but these hold more oil than their predecessors
