107 M8 Oil Consumption Problems
#21
My dealer said br8ng it in Friday. Sorry some of you haven’t heard about this problem but I’m not joking and I’m not full of it, so thanks for the smart remarks, but it’s real. It’s happened four times, no blue smoke, no oil dripping, no oil on the back of the bike. My Ultra Classic never used oil between changes, but the M8 has used 6. And a $32,000 investment that you can’t trust on vacation is no laughing matter.

At 2300 miles my '18 FLTRXS RGS "consumed 8 oz. of oil. Took her into service. Service thought it would need a tear down & rebuild. They contacted HD directly & was informed that 1 qt/1500 miles is acceptable. The Dealership even printed out the official HD specs for this issue. They recommend checking the oil every 500 miles.
I drop $31K on a new bike & this sh*t is "acceptable?? This is B!S!

My m8 Heritage 114 started using oil after the first service. Used it really bad on the Interstate, 1 qt in 750 miles at speeds of around 75-80. Had about 3800 on it and I traded it back to the dealer for a Rushmore bike.
They later told me it was because I had a K&N oil filter on it. Yeah, I know.

I too am experiencing above average oil consumption with my 17 Limited, about a quart every 2000 miles, but no leaks or smoking. Bike was broken in as per the OM and sees a lot of Freeway speeds. Dealer also thinks it may be a ring issue and wants to do a teardown this fall. I ride with a crew that has older bikes, both Harley & Japanese, and with our recent 2200 hundred mile trip around Lake Superior, my bike was the only one to experience oil loss (1 qt) and transmission fluid (5 oz) migration.

Back to the old tired shovelhead days when you never went more than 200 miles without a quart of oil in the saddle bag.

If I checked my motor oil at every fuel stop, I'd probably go through a quart every 1k miles just from wiping oil off the dipstick.
Nobody is going to check their oil at every fuel stop. Manufacturers put this kind of ridiculous instruction in their manuals to help relieve them of warranty liability in case an owner cooks his motor due to low oil level. Oil checking is a rider/owner responsibility. Failure to do it could give manufacturer an out.
I notice the local dealer parts dept is selling disposable cardboard oil funnels. A necessary tool for putting oil into the motor or tranny out on the road. It'd be real hard to get any oil into the cases without a funnel.

what they really need is a Screaming Eagle Intravenous drip system to automate the process
