Its only when engine is between 2200rpm to 3000 rpm on less than 30% throttle and no load. As soon as any load comes on incld going up a steep hill it disappears. Dosnt make the noise in netural or in first gear with clutch in reving it up to 3000 rpm.
Bike has to be in motion on road . Does it in all gears.
Its made the noise since around 1000 klm.
Its a Thock thock thock sound . Loud if you put your head at the front of the tank
Dosnt sound at all like metal to metal contact.
more like a main bearing knock.
be interesting to hear your story about validating that observation...LOL

It must be the normal m8 engine sound as it would have blown uo by now if it was anything serious. Ive drivin It hard on ocassions. Rev limiter in gears . Helld at 160 klm/hr for 30 mins and nailed it to a top speed of 185k.
I must add it runs very hot and the cooling fans come on as soon as one pulls up to rest or you are going at low speed but it does over 50mpg criusing at 70mph.
I will get dealer to go over it and take it for a drive at the 8000 klm service in a few weeks time. Will add on what they say then.
Cheers, Thanks for the help.

The exhaust cross over pipe connection at the head pipe is the least secure connection of the three clamped joints, Infact when doing maintenance where you want the left muffler removed, its much easier to pull the left muffler and crossover pipe as a unit, than it is to just remove the muffler. A loose connection at this clamp point can make some good racket. sounding like a deep knocking.

I know this thread is old...

But, I bought a 2022 FLTRK, and it behaves precisely as described. Had a 2020 FLFBSANV and it did not do this.

Has anyone ever found out the reason, or what causes this noise?

I have a 2020 107 FLHX with 15,000 miles. If I’m in, say, 3rd, 4th, 5th... at, say, 2200-2500 RPM, and “get on it” it knocks. Sounds like wrenches clanking, or car keys ever so briefly. It’s just for a split second.

I’m running a Powervision tuner and have sent datalogs to Fuel Moto. They say I shouldn’t be able to hear what little (normal) detonation they see in the logs.

I have given up trying to figure out what it is.

The bike runs GREAT with an HD Ventilator AC, and Fullsac 2” baffles welded in the stock slip ons, and decatted head pipe.

I hada similar noise, got a few opinions from 2 different HD dealers. Decided to just buy the parts and let my indie do the work. Stock cam & oil pump (HD upgraded) adj pushrods and V thunder lifters. Bike has never been this quiet. Runs like a new bike. 2017 FLTRU with 46k.

This is not detonation by any stretch. It's something totally different.
