Inner cam bearing
 
Most everyone agrees to upgrade the stock factory bearing when in the cam chest, so what's the symptoms of a failing bearing?

A bearing can go 10 miles or 100,000 miles. Typically when a bearing goes its catastrophic and you get bits of metal throughout the motor. The stock bearing uses a cage to hold each roller separate. The upgraded bearing omits the cage and almost doubles the amount of rollers that are supporting the inner end of the camshaft.

That's all true. My question is more about symptoms before the bearing actually fails catastrophically, maybe there are none.

There are no symptoms and you probably won't hear anything till you feel the loss of power.As usual if there are any engine noises,switch off and call a recovery.The caged bearings can run at higher revs and are more durable for standard load applications.They cost more,so Harley do not fit them to save money as often suggested.They recommend an upgrade to old fashioned,full compliment only with the high lift higher load stage 111 cams.

I can speak from experience...prior to the inner cam bearing failing on my 2006 Ultra at about 28k miles I was hearing something similar to a "pinging/rattling" sound. I searched all over, even with a stethoscope (lol) and could not figure it out. The on the day it actually failed, I was about 10 miles onto a ride and the engine was "missing" like a SOB. Got it towed home, pulled the cam chest plate and saw metal shavings along with actual needle bearings. Here's a pic of the bearing after I pulled it.
