2 up full touring load from sea level to 5500 ft. Yes last 30 miles with the reserve light on! We also have friends who only use
the top half of the tank but they cant ride with us.
could be a problem for the millions of people with smaller tanks or general purpose bikes

Decent. With our M8 Limited we get upper 30s mpg two-up and packed. That's at 70 mph. Haven't tried a full tank at 55 or 60 to verify the mpg at that speed.

Rotopax and Gas Bag Fuel Safe Bladders are two possible solutions. Looks like either could fit on the topcase luggage rack.

I'd appreciate advice from anyone who has carried along extra fuel. Thanks.
You should be fine in the lower 48 not to carry extra fuel. Route/fuel stop planning should keep you out of trouble.

No problem in the lower 48. It's northern and western Canada that concern me.

A buddy of mine has a sidecar with a 13 gallon tank. Electric fuel pump for transfer.

That is 13 gallon aux tank, with 5 more from stock FLH tank

not for everyone but no other option mentioned so far comes close.

also anyone willing to tow a trailer (not me, no way no how) can haul gas easily.

I am planning on adding a Rotopax to hang off the bottom of my Tourpac rack before heading out West for a trip. One of those items that I don't plan on needing, but its always nice to have an extra 40 miles of gas in case the fuel gauge gets away from me in Kansas.

Issue is they are only a gallon each. They fit down inside the saddle bags in the back angled area.

this isn't going into the new bags. It will fit '13 and older. I had on for my '13 and sold it when I for my '19 limited
