It's inconsistent for me. I've gotten as much as 20k out of the stock tire, only to get 12k out of the next one with no difference in riding habits. I always have them put the stock Dunlops on, never had anything else.

As I recall the American Elites are identical to the oem Dunlops except for the cost and Harley logo. Not sure how they can be "so much better".

Your memory must be failing you:
Elites

OEM

Different compound, different tread depths, etc. (source: dunlop.com)

As I recall the S&W 1911 is identical to the Hi-Point 1911 except for the cost and S&W logo. Not sure how it can be "so much better".

7000 is the most I ever get out of the rear. Change the front every other time.

Irrelevant comparison. The American Elite is manufactured by Dunlop, same company that makes the OEM tire. While they are not identical, tread pattern is different, they both have the same tire composition. According to Dunlop, they are the same tire with different tread pattern.

as Brandon mentioned, different tread depth..AEs start life with 1/32nd more tread than the OEM combos which means longer life..one of the main reasons I have stuck with them for several years now

It is the same exact tire carcass like you said. Both Dunlop and American Elites are manufactured in Buffalo, New York. Only plant left in the U.S. that makes motorcycle tires. I normally get 23,000-25,000 out of a rear tire, either brand.

26,000 out of the stocker but probably could have change it out a couple thousand earlier without feeling too bad about it. Replaced with Commander IIs about a month ago.

Not true. I was educated by a Dunlop factory rep at Daytona last year and then got to see them side to side. They flat out told me the American Elites were better tires than the harley dunlops and they were right. A more aggressive tread pattern and according to the Dunlop guys, should yield higher mileage.
