This the thread I've been looking for. I want to do a stage I and keep the stock look. I'm currently running S&S MK 45's on a stock headpipe and breather. I have my V&H FP3 ready to go. If the K&N 1717 is a straight swap, it's the way to go for a high flow breather. Maybe do the yobtaf103 mod, and thanks Gary1 for the tip.

Your right about it not being a true high flow stage 1. However, I've read where even the stock breather on the Rushmore's allows enough air for a stage 1. You can read about anything on the web.
On my 16 RGS I went with the FM High flow breather, Jackpot headpipe, v&h monster rounds and a FP3 and could not tell much difference from stock other than the reduce heat. Heat doesn't seem to be quite the factor on the M8.
I may change my mind about the breather, but I do know my bike is running lean with just slip-ons.

This filter is a replacement for the OEM filter but unless you're changing the back plate, I don't think just changing the filter alone is classified as a stage 1 upgrade. I swapped this one in on my ultra because the supposedly cleanable OEM does not come clean. I immediately felt like I gained 5 hp! I'm kidding. I didn't notice any difference at all but at least I won't have to replace it.
