Default M8 oil consumption

My 2018 FXLR is using about 1/2 quart of oil every 1300 miles. I have 3500 miles on it and I am using HD 20w50 oil. I don't see any smoking or leaking oil. My dealer said not to worry about it until I get 5000 miles on the bike and that Harley considered using one quart per1500 miles is normal? So what do you think?

Here's what I think. They arent going to do anything about it because there's a technical note out, which I've read that says 1QT ever 1500 miles is acceptable.

Plenty of threads on this already.

I think it sucks and I do not think waiting until 5000 miles will make it much better.

Mine pukes out all over the side of the bike, out the air cleaner. It's not even near full either!

Part of the fun owning a Harley I suppose.

I think you need to pay for a compression test and work out why because if valves and rings are seated it shouldn’t.

Keep in mind that Harley thinks that 25% leakage is acceptable in a compression test. Nutty but true.

I agree but would do the more accurate leak down test. I paid for it out of pocket since I didn't want to buy the equipment needed. Only cost $70. Definitely worth the peace of mind. Also, to the OP. Make sure and do your oil checks hot and after idling the bike UPRIGHT for a minute or 2. Don't idle on the side stand like Harley says. And keep the oil level below full when hot. I thought my bike was using a bit of oil when it was in fact pumping it out the breathers. Since I changed methods of checking it and keeping the level 1/2 way on the stick she hot I am having no usage. Worth trying to see.

Yes I always check the oil level with the bike idling straight up for 2 minutes before checking the oil.

I had that issue when I went on long rides. Installed a catch can and solved that issue.
