Colorado 149 in late May?
I'm passing through this area on a road trip from Gunnison via CO 149 heads south down to Pagosa Springs I was wondering what the snow pack is like and if these roads are worth trying to pass through at this time of year only been through them in August?
Thanks J

Caution will be required, but it should be possible. Snow is always possible up in the higher parts in May, but, if it hasn't snowed, the road should be clear and dry. Just be prepared for rain and snow, and be prepared to cancel your trip if there's a late snowstorm at the highest parts. It is likely to be chili in parts, so dress warmly.
Otherwise have fun, it's a beautiful area.

You will cross Slumgullion, Spring Creek and Wolf Creek passes on your way to Pagosa from Gunnison. I am near Lake City and have ridden 149 between Gunni and South Fork over 100 times and many times continued to Pagosa and Durango. The weather is a bit unpredictable so you should check the forecast before heading out. Typically late-May into June is on the drier side. Watch for the gravel on the roads on the passes especially the tight switchbacks heading up Slumgullion (obey the 15 MPH speed limit on a couple switchbacks) and the backside of Wolf Creek. Also, watch for deer, elk and moose as I have had all cross in front of me on 149. Lake City, Creede and South Fork all have have gas and plenty of restaurants. If you have any specific questions, let me know. I would stop at the Windy Point vantage point just south of Lake City as you are climbing up Slumgullion as you will get a great view of the San Juans and Uncompahgre Peak which is the highest peak in the San Juan Mountains. P.S. The snowpack is the lowest in 15 years so there won't be much except at the highest passes.
