back in the saddle - 96 wide glide
sold my last bike in 09 after getting married (o4 springer softail) - same story , we had kids , wife didn't ride anymore , I didn't have time .. bla blah.
here is 2017 and I gave into the itch after moving to a new town where there are a bunch of guys in my vol firehouse my age that ride. found a purple 96 glide on the auction site and nailed it for $4300 - 18k miles. bike was from north Carolina. the guy said there was some rust on the rear sprocket and rims. bike shows up and it looks like this guy parked it in the ocean. I may be exaggerating , but he could have described a bit more. good news is the slight pitting is clearing up nicely with fine steel wool and chrome polish , but the rims will have to be replaced. the tins are in great shape and I totally dig that deep purple. bad news is that there is that slight pitting on EVERY piece of brightwork and its so cold right now that the damned polish is freezing up! so I have a lot of detailed rubbing to do in small places.
question for you guys - the lower fork sliders look like the front sides of them were pelted with salt water for days and are very discolored. I tried going at it a bit with the same technique , but its not doing much. I need to find out if anybody has the magic bullet for "bringing back " the alloy lower sliders.

Welcome from up here in the Great State of Maine. Someone will be along, I'm sure, that has had to deal with this same issue. Good luck with the clean up.
