I have my bike in the dealership getting some work done to it. They said their is firmware update to the computer (currently .3) which is ".4" They do not know what the update includes and said it wouldn't know until Tuesday. Does anyone have any information on this or a link to version .4?

Are you sure that it's the ECM they're referring to and not the infotainment system? I've heard nothing about ECM firmware updates as of late but infotainment, yes. The current one that was released just last week is .2 I don't think that many dealers are really up to speed with these updates for the infotainment system either.

 

I'm sure.. I asked him (service manager) if it were the infocenter or ecu and he said it was the ECM. They are checking the dyno and had to make a few changes but it wont let them until the do they update, yada yada yada. Just trying to verify

 

When I had my 10K service done a month ago they updated my ECM also. They said the twin and air cooled came out with the same ECM EFI & timing maps. The new one is specific to air cooled or twin cooled. Which would make since due to the cooler head temps and higher compression on the twin cooled motor.

Ahh, no - parts replacement is a hardware update. What we get in updates are in IT parlance firmware updates, consisting of changes to the embedded software that resides in the hardware... Gotta love IT..

 

This is what I've always understood… 'Software' is loaded from a persistent storage medium into volatile memory, from which the 'software' executes; 'firmware' is stored in non-volatile memory from which it executes. Both are essentially the same thing--a program. The difference is in the memory type from which they run.

When you turn off your device, software is 'erased' from memory; firmware remains in memory.

Yes so your ECM program/routines are store in, reside in, the non volatile memory, which is analogous to the ROM (read only memory where your basic input output routines are stored for your Personal desktop/laptop Computer).

When an update to the firmware takes place it changes, replaces the program in the firmware to the newest version of the program for your ECM.

 

I guess the definitions have changed since I retired?

Used to be software was a download, firmware was a replacement ROM swap (software burned on a write once, read many memory chip) and a hardware change would mean replacement of the entire ECM.
