Default S and S 124 and 111 or HD 110 Kit or 120R

Hey guys,

Choices are: S and S Motor 111 or 124 or HD 110 Tire shredder kit or a 120R Motor

I'm getting to the point where I can consider some serious mods
to my SGS.

Looking for 2 view points - conversations:

1. If you had the cash to blow which way would you go and why.

2. Interested to hear from guys that have done one of these and what they
think.

Thanks !

A couple of questions.....what are you going to do with the bike? Bar Hopper, Long Touring, combination? Are you talking the motors in stock configuration like they come or modified?
Have taken the 110 route had one built buy a reputable engine builder/tuner. Made 120 squared when done. Bike was a blast to ride. Things I didn't like with my build...valve train noise, (get used to it) was running a TMan 660sm cam, TMan Heads, 10.8 compression, and throttle body noise. HPI 58MM throttle body. Bike was very well manored down low and pulled very hard up to 6000 rpms. But a lot of mechanical noise. Sort of a gearhead....couldn't wrap my head around a that's the way its going to always sound. Then the hotter weather hit and it got even louder.
All things considered, if I was to do it again, I would do big cubic inches with a mild build. So my advice go S&S 124 or 120R. Two different offerings though. You may have to do some mods to get the 120R to be as dependable as the 124.

It's my all around bike. A little of all that, Riding around the lake, to town To Lunch as well as some 300 to 400 mile Runs. So it needs to be suited to pretty well to everything. From idling in traffic to Blastiing down the Interstate 80 mph for hours to leisurely cruising.

What I like about the S and S
is that is already comes with Nice EZ Start cams and is "Built" Where the 120R seems like you still have to do some mods to make it stouter and reliable.

I'm glad you told me the 110 has a lot of mechanical noise. That's not what I'm looking for.

Its funny the S and S salesperson said the 111 is an excellent choice and
is more reliable than the 124. I could never get them to say why

That was on my build, others may vary. Going into it my builder told me about the increased valve train, and throttle body noise, but I though I would put up with it for the power increase. Once I got used to the power, then I focused on the mechanical side more and that's when I really noticed it. Others have had builds and say they are quiet as a stock motor. Guess it just depends on the build.

My 110 in my cvo experienced catastrophic failure at 18k due to a lifter problem.

Choice was rebuild, s&s 124 or 120R. The ST was not out.

No to rebuild, the 110 was always a dog, noisy and hot.

Did not like the 124 due to need for external oil line. Talked to Star performance and they assured me it was not a problem. Looked at a few and said, no.

Ended up with 120R. First, in delivered form, very quiet engine. Great upper rpms power, kinda a dog down low below 3K.

Changed cams, valve Springs, lifters and push rods.

Engine was transformed. Great power across the curve. Does not run hot. I have lowers on the bike. Switched to jagged 10 row oil cooler from HD cooler and bought the SE bigger oil pan, which you do not need.

Oil temp is 225 running, creeps up in traffic, power from engine is always available. Completely transformed the bike.

The 120R or the 120 ST platform is where I would go. The 120 ST with 259 cams and TB is A GREAT PACKAGE, with almost everything you need. Good numbers and a nice barginn option if you consider after install a bargain will be in the 8 to 10k range if you get all the goodies.

My 120R is a semi daily rider, short and long trips(multiple bikes, can only ride 1 at the time). 130's hp, 140's tq. Full sac x pipe and full sac 2.25 re-core CVO mufflers. PV, tuner.

Other than changing cams and lifters which I choose to do, no issues with my install. I'm about 12K in miles after install.

what about a 120st it is $5700 you could out right sell your motor after that to offset some of the cost.

I had the SE 120r race kit installed on my bike we put crane 600 cams in it as well as the Hurricane heads and 64 mm intake it makes 128hp and 139 tq through a modified SE 2-1-2 exhaust. It is noisy on the top end and I have a hard time with that but it isn't the end of the world to me. I looked at all the options available to me but living in northern B.C. I wanted access to parts and service.

Harley just came out with a bolt on kit to take the 110 to a 117. Its in the Screamin Eagle Parts Catalog. Don't know of any on the street yet, but several builds underway. Following on other forums. Its another option....but only if you have a 110 already.
