It's the first thing I do when I get the bike home. I believe I had them off before my bike got cold. Unless your bike is yellow, than it might look better on.
I polished my aluminum lowers with a few grit sandpapers then metal polish while on a lift so that the forks were extended to get beyond the uppers. I couldn't get the entire lower, but they looked a lot better than when they oxidized. Before that I considered $600 chrome which look really great. They I saw a guy who claimed the design on his were from a process call hydro dipping. He said he didn't have to remove to have them done (?). Chrome vinyl wrap may be a option. I also thought about engraving mine.
I left them on mine for about a year. Then one day, I guess a stone chipped and cracked one of them. So instead of paying for a new reflector, I removed them both.
Take them off but keep them. If your state has an inspection, they have to be there. Ask me how I found out.
We have a safety inspection every time we renew plates. I think that is an inspection fail in Missouri, but I am not sure. But honestly, the safety inspection here is REALLY lax depending on who you go to.
