Can you use any trickle charger on the stock pigtail or does harley require THEIR charger? My trickle charger has the same plug. Just wanna make sure it'll work before I plug it in.

No problems using my BatteryTender with the stock pigtail on mine. What you don't want to do is try to jump start it through the pigtail, the fuse in the pigtail won't handle that kind of current draw.

 

I use a battery The Battery Tender.The green one.Harley has their own also.

 

I use the Yuasa SmartShot 1.5a, 5 phase tender. Unfortunately they're difficult to find now as Yuasa no longer makes this badboy. They make 3 phase tenders now like everyone else. I've had my ride on the Yuasa SmartShot 5 phase for over 9 months continuously, (winter storage followed by me working several months overseas), with zero issues whatsoever.

You don't need to occasionally unplug these units,,,, ever,,, they do that for you.

 

Thanks for the responses. Thats what I was wondering. Tried to ride my bike to work this morning but the battery was too low. It'll be plugged in to the trickle charger tonight after work. That **** won't happen again!

 

FYI....sometimes a small trickle charger won't charge up a fully discharged battery (ie: dead). It's ALWAYS wise to just plug the cycle in whenever you're not riding it. Best to buy a good "MAINTAINER" type of charger....Battery Tender & Battery Minder are two of the top brands, about $40 on line.

 

My bike has been on the Battery Tender Jr. since the bike was new. First battery lasted 7 years and was still going strong when I replaced it. I figured that being proactive was better than being pro stranded somewhere.
Batteries have a tendency to not warn you when they're going to die.

The old battery is still going strong in a riding mower (still on a tender).

 

Harley dealer gave me one in my "Goodie Bag" I never used it, (never have before, always ride year round, even in Missouri) But my RG was dead after sitting for two weeks in October,, not sure if it had to do with stereo amp, (Shouldn't be on of course with key off) or what,, or if it's just a cheaper battery they put in. (MY '10 SG or 2000 Softail would never had been dead after 2 weeks sitting, I KNOW) Either way, I am using the tender now, when I remember to plug it in anyway...

 

A "trickle charger" is an old school device and term. It will deliver a small amount of current to your battery even after it is fully charged, and ruin it if left on long enough.
A "battery maintainer" will automatically level off after a full charge is reached, and recharge if necessary.
I saw a comparison several years ago for AGM chargers, this one came out on top, and it is what I use on my HD.

 

My battery tender jr plugged in to the harley pigtail and seems to work fine.
