Single Speaker Headset
Looking for a wired, single speaker, non helmet headset w/boom microphone. State of Illinois does not allow 2 speaker non helmet headsets.

What I've found says, "Wearing headset receivers is not permitted while driving. Exempts intercom helmets on motorcycles, cellular phone earpieces, and single-sided headsets."
So wearing a set of headphones or BOTH earbuds on your phone while driving a car is illegal. Since IL says you can use your phone while driving, but it has to be hands-free, using just one of your earbuds is perfectly legal.
The law also exempt helmets with intercom speakers, and since IL is a non-helmet state, then common sense would say that headsets specifically designed for use with the motorcycle's intercom system would fall under that same exemption.
That would be my argument to the judge, anyway.

smithyp83 - I am not from IL, so, I may not have the full story.
Reading your post somehow tell me that the exception only applies to speakers in a helmet. The fact that IL is a non helmet state does not imply that it is illegal to use a helmet. So, in my opinion, if you use a helmet, you can have two speakers.
I therefore disagree with your common sense theory that since IL is a non helmet state, this would imply that headsets made for motorcycles fall under the same exemption.

I believe the problem here is that we are both trying to use common sense, which we know does not work when dealing with a Government body. And, since we are talking about lawmakers in Illinois, I should know better to even think common sense would ever come into play.
IMHO, based on the judicial "Reasonable Man" concept, I don't believe that a judge would find that using intercom speakers in a helmet would be any different or safer than those same intercom speaker used under a half helmet or helmetless.
"Your Honor, if intercom speakers were unsafe to use without a helmet, how can they be considered safe to use when embedded in a helmet? Since the State has already deemed intercom speakers to be safe to use when in a helmet, they are, by default, safe enough to use with a half helmet or helmetless."
