Default Engine oil consumption

I was out for a ride today and the oil light came on. I immediately pull over and found the dipstick to be dry. It took nearly 2 quarts to come up to full. I'm about 4500 miles into the oil change so it's time for fresh oil anyway but I was shocked how low it was. No drips in the garage and the bike has no visible smoke. It's a 2015 RG special with a Stage 3 SE kit.

Anyone else see oil consumption?

Have you changed the air breather / intake recently?

Had a buddy put an after market breather assembly on and he did something wrong with the mounting bolts if I remember correctly. We were riding and saw his bike was smoking bad. It burned about 1 quart of oil in less than 50 miles.

He had the dealer check it out and correct the issue and no more problems.

Hope yours isn't a minor issue.

Nope. Air cleaner has been the same for 9000 miles

I had a SG, can't remember but think it was an 09. Damn thing drank oil like you are describing. Never saw smoke, no drips, and every Harley dealer service dept I spoke with said it was normal. I never did buy into it. Just doesn't seem right. I have never had a Harlet before or after that did that. Hope you find the issue, I never did.

Wish I could help, but none of my twin cams ever used oil. How long since the stage 3 install?

I just did the 5K on my 2016 RGS. The dealer did the 1K. Only drained 2.3 Qts out of it.
Installed new filter and put in 3 Qts. Also, as part of the 5K check pulled and inspected air filter and noticed oil from the crank case vent line. Not a lot, but noticeable.
No runs, drips or smoke on the bike.

My '15 Ultra shows zero measurable oil consumption between 3000 mi. changes. H-D dino oil, broken in by the book and no major engine mods.

As far as I could tell, it consumed about one "dot" (on the dipstick) of oil riding about 30 miles home from the dealer when I bought it. As soon as I got home I changed the oil & filter. Never used a measurable drop since. I top it up to the "full hot" mark right after I change it and have ridden it a few miles to get it to op temp and it just stays there till the next change.

Never any oil in the air filter either.

FWIW, I ride pretty conservatively, so that might have something to do with my results.

Good luck,

JP

Maybe you are not riding enough. When I bought my sportster it was over 4 years old and only had 4000 miles and would eat oil but wouldn't smoke or anything but I still kept riding it all the time and it suddenly stopped eating oil I haven't had to add any since, and im almost ready for my next oil change now. I don't know if the rings were letting ot go by or it valve seals were slightly leaking who knows but after some regular use it stopped
