Let's bring up the Water pumps again, diff options?
 

I know this is a subject that seems to be either bad, like my water pump went out at 28,000 miles on a trip and it cost me $800 or good like, my bike has 63,000 miles on it and no problems with the pump.
So I guess my question will be has anyone tried another pump other than the HD one? If I remember correctly there was a bosch pump that was very similar for a 1/4 of the cost. Now my bike has 36,000 miles on it with no issues so far but I'm planning on a South Dakota ride in early June and it has me wondering whether to install a new one or not.
Looking at the big picture there seems to be no way to say mileage has anything to do with it or not but I'd rather not get half way out there and that happen either. Am I being paranoid, maybe. Am I being to cautious, not sure.
I'd just like some other opinions and info if someone knows of a different pump working or not with success.

Don't know about aftermarket but you can get OEM for $350 shipped. If it's a concern to you carry one as a spare... stories abound of folks stranded because they go out while on a trip & none of the local dealers had one. Yeah, I know.... but at least the trip would be saved.

If I was on a trip when my pump went out I would just keep riding and not worry about it. These bikes are still primarily air cooled and would just try to avoid being stuck in any stop and go traffic.

If I were you, I would NOT give someone advice like this.
How about if it burns up his engine? Are you going to help pay for the damage? I didn't think so.

I know a lot of these losers on here ascribe to this as a stop gap measure to continue riding.

If you are going to give the advice, I'd say; "if it were my bike"..........

Maybe you should reread my post. I I I I I .....

My pump went out during a weeklong trip to the smoky mountains. Yeah, the temp light came on and fans would never run. Just kept on riding, all the way to the Asheville dealership, where they told me to keep riding also (didn't have a pump in stock). Bike never "felt" any hotter and ran the same. Funny thing is, after riding all day with the overtemp light on, it went out after the last gas fill-up of the day. Fans came on normally and everything was working good.

It did fail again a week later and I ultimately got it fixed under my extended warranty.

I rode 265Kms to get to the nearest dealer that had a pump in stock last summer, that was over 7,000Kms ago, no engine problems.

But to get back on topic, I would like to know if there is an alternative pump as well.

I've got a bit over 16,000 miles (~26,00 km) on my 2015 and so far no water pump failures.

But between all the folks who have experienced a failure and that Harley redesigned the Water Pump and the computer logic that controls it for the 2017 model year, I'll not be surprised if/when mine goes out.

I've gone so far as to price a new one from Harley and "save" it on a couple of the on-line Harley Dealer web sites: The Harley Part Number for my bike is 26600012. Roughly $310 seems to be the lowest price out there.

However, the Harley Water Pump looks exactly like a Bosch Inter-cooler Water Pump that is used on an awful lot of turbocharged cars. These Bosch Water Pumps go for around $60 to $80. I can't be the only one who has noticed this. Looking at some Bosch information it appears that one or more of the following Bosh Part Numbers might be an exact replacement: 0392020024, 0392020034, 0392020039 and 0392020064. The physical external dimensions of the pump and the size of the water hose fittings would be the only deal breakers. It might even be that the wiring connectors are the same, although that could be easily handled.

See the attached Bosch Catalog and the pictures.

Someone somewhere must have walked through a WD's warehouse and seen if any of these match up.

One unknown is the flow rate of the stock unit. I can see moving the water through too fast, or too slow could be a problem.

Maybe they're all the same :icon_shrug:
