Default Clutch cable wearing through

So I'm an idiot... last season I had 16" yaffe's installed and didn't realize the higher bars raised the clutch cable height as well. I put my windshield on for a longer ride and when I got home I saw the windshield had rubbed through the plastic coating on my brand new clutch cable. For the time being I just wrapped it in electrical tape, but was curious if shrink tube might be a better long term solution? Or should I just bite the bullet and replace the line?

With it contacting the shield anything you wrap the cable with will probably get rubbed through over time. A new cable will get rubbed through again also though if it still contacts the shield. It’s probably more a matter of if it bothers you. If you don’t want to spend the money on a new cable and don’t ride with the shield most times, why not save the money and just wrap the part that’s rubbed. If it being wrapped does bother you then I’d get a new cable and figure out a way to not let it hit the shield when you put it on.

In the times you want the shield on for a trip, you could get a piece of foam weatherstrip that has the sticky backing and wrap the cable in the contact spot. Then when you’re back home and don’t want the shield on, you could just peel the weather stripping off.

Thanks for the reply! I haven't used the windshield since it happened and don't plan to again. I'm more curious what to wrap it with? Would shrink tube work or just stay with electrical tape?

Shrink tube would be the more permanent solution over tape since it wouldn’t want to peel after a bit. I wouldn’t hesitate to use the shield again if it worked well on the long trip, I’d just use a piece of foam or something soft where the shield and cable meet. You could even tie a bandana around that spot for something quick and easy.
