Default oil filter leak

I changed oil in my 2000 Roadking. Oil filter has some seepage around gasket where it seals to housing. Changed filter still leaking. Filter is not loose. Any Ideas? thanks Joe

Not wanting to sound like you didn't do it right but did you wet the gasket on the filter with a bit of oil to make the seal and then tighten by hand to contact then 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn more?

Also did you wipe the filter mount surface clean before installing the new one? Overtightening can cause a leak by crushing the gasket as can debris between the mount and the gasket.

When I install a new oil filter I back it of about 1/8" after reaching the desired tightest point. This seems to flatten the gasket. I also use Dowcorning DC 3 on the gasket instead of engine oil. Been using it on aircooled aircraft engine oil filters for years. Makes getting the oil filter off a whole lot easier.

Are you running a cooler on this bike with a sandwitch type adapter under the filter?

i used to do the hand tight thing like how ya do a car but mine as well seaped. so the last two times i changed it i used the oil filter wrench to tighten it a little tighter and have had no leaks for 5k on each change.

No cooler. hand tight then 1/4 turn, same as always, never had problem. just hear that if the stud the filter attaches to is loose, may seep.

Make sure the stud is tight.Oil the filter rubber gasket.Clean off the surface the gasket touches with some steel wool and make sure none gets into the filter housing.(also make sure the gasket from the old filter is not stuck on there). Wipe surface off with brakekleen on a clean. Screw on filter. Hand tighten and add 1/4-1/2 turn with the oil filter wrench. You should be good to go.

Make sure you are using the correct oil filter as well.
