Big mistake -- oil change --

Exclamation Big mistake -- oil change --

on my first oïl change on a road king 2004, I used the crank plug instead the oïl plug to drain the engine oïl, it did camme out 4 pint of oïl, but is this danger to my engine and crank,...

In the future use this picture. The drain plug is labeled mag plug.

I didn't post it to be funny. I was afraid to change my oil because of all the threads where people make this common mistake. I found this picture on the oil stickie. It is a picture they should have in the service manual. At least in the '03 manual there are no pictures or diagrams.

Its only bad if you happen to strip it out. I would put it back in with some white thread sealant and leave it alone

If you do a search you can see this happens quite a bit. It would be nice if some of the people who have done this would update us on if it ever caused problems.

I've heard that if you retighten too much you can crack the case. Have to be careful.

This is the reason they make Shop Manuals. By the way, EVERYONE should own one so you don't make dumb mistakes!

My '03 shop manual has vague directions, and no diagrams. That is why so many people make this mistake, and why I didn't change my oil, until I had someone show me the right plug.

HD Service manual:


The owner's manual actually has a better diagram, which I didn't realize, because everybody on HDF always tells you to get the Service manual.
