1. Oil does "wear out". Additives in the oil make it Multi-weight (20w50)...these wear out and you're left with straight 50w oil which will starve critical parts at start up. More additives clean the engine and they wear out too.

2. The filter only removes solids; it cannot remove bad liquids like acids that form in the oil.


It's best to follow the manufacturer of the oils recommendations. They are over-cautious as they don't want to be sued; but do you really want to risk ruining your $40,000 super, duper, glide?..just save $30 on oil?


If you really want to push the oil life past what is recommended, send in a sample to be analyzed. As long as your driving habits remain about the same, one oil analysis will give you a good idea on how far you can go between changes.


What I typically do is change it each season no matter how many miles under the manufacturers limit. I then run that oil through a home made filter using a 1 micron water filter element and then use that oil in an old car and my lawnmower.
