As an FAA licensed Airframe and Power Plant mechanic with over 42 years experience, I`m going to respectfully disagree with your reference to aviation oil...

Aviation engine oil does not contain any dispersants which will form ash, this includes ZDDP.

They don`t call it Ahsless Dispersant Oil for nothing...

Aviation motor oil is a whole different ballgame compared to automotive motor oils.

I've been running 15w50 for at least ten years now. No worries at all.

5qt jug is $22.88 at Wally World

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mobil-1-1...5-qt./20713647

Mobil 1 has their rebate program going again.....$12 rebate.

https://mobiloil.com/en/promotion/mo...nd-mobil-super

Comes out to $10.88 for 5 qts which is enough to do the engine and primary....can't beat that!

Thanks Bama. Was just about to start looking to stock up for a winter oil change.

Do you know if you can get more than 1 rebate? $15 for bike oil & $12 for car?

20w50 is ~$10 a quart
15w50 is ~$24 for FIVE quarts at Walmart = ~$4.80...half price!

It's a car motor oil, so it can only go in the engine. You must run something else for the Transmission and Primary (I use Amsoil specifics).

The 15w or 20w doesn't matter much, that's just the cold flow spec.

What really matters is the w50 number...that is hot flow spec...and Harley wants 50 weight oil in that hot engine.

This is how I read it too, (dunno about airplanes). Its up to the purchaser really, but as I understand it, lowering the ZDDP for automotive engines was an EPA requirement, not SAE. IMHO higher ZDDP in MC engines is probably a good thing,, FWIW.
