New build- 1st start- freezing temps
#11
Dude, you are just asking for trouble...20W50 is pretty heavy oil for 40 degree temps..I'd drain that out (keep it for hotter weather) and put in some 5w or 10w40 oil.
I've seen test numbers where the engine parts furthest from the oil pump can spin upwards of 100 times before oil reaches them...you have heavy, ice cold, oil, bike has never ran...dude...when you start that bike, it may take many 100's of rotations before those parts get any oil...YIKES!
1. Leave the oil in there for now.
2. Buy thinner oil and keep it in the warmest spot in your house.
3. 40+ degree weather, park the bike in the sun and drain that thick oil.
4. Install the warm, thinner oil, remove the plugs but keep them touching the heads so they'll spark (just pulling the wires can damage your coil) and turn the bike over for a few seconds to pump that oil through the engine.
5. Put the plugs back and start the bike.
That's what I'd do...

If you're planning to leave your bike un-run until warmer weather, just leave as is. No point changing the oil just because the weather is cold, unless you plan to run it. Having said that running a new build when the weather is so darned cold isn't a good idea!

I've been known to use two small space heaters. One pointed on the oil tank, one on the engine itself. Let them run wide open for a day or so. Pull the plugs, spin it over and circulate some oil, put the plugs in and give it hell. We're not talking about space shuttle tolerances here. While it's warming up, put plenty of clothes on and go ride dammit!!!
