Default To those of you who run ATF in your primary

I know a lot of guys that do it and I'm exploring the idea now. It makes sense to me why it works well. An auto trans or FWD trans or even a transfer case (a lot take ATF) have the same components as our primaries, makes sense it works well. With that said, there are so many different kinds out there. What kind do you use and why? I'm going to try it, just don't know wether to go with a universal type fluid or a Ford ATF (Mercon V) or what.

I use Mobile 1 synthetic ATF. My experience is great. No Comp issues or clutch problems. YMMV.

I mix amsoil atf & amsoil primary. Plan to try mobil 4t 10-40 so I don't have to mix. Atf alone I don't think has enough protection but for sure shifts the best.

Why wouldn't you think it protects enough? Seems to be plenty for hydraulic pump internals, and load bearing parts in auto transmissions. Seems like the simple design and load characteristics would be an easy job for ATF. Not to mention, good for a multi-plate clutch setup.

never seen a harley with sun gears. seen centrifugal clutch lockup but not hydraulic. atf is more hydraulic in nature. also some have friction modifiers which may/may not be compatible. just saying, i am sticking to mfg.

Just going by what I see when I drain. Might be just that u can see it more because it's somewhat transparent. The mix seams to give good shifting and protection. I even tried red line primary, which looks to be ATF. I've never tried formal plus but did drain it from friends bike and can see where it would work good & why most like it.

Got fluids and filter for the bike today, will change tomorrow morning before my dad and I go for a ride.

I ended up with this. https://lucasoil.com/products/motorc...otorcycle-oils

ill run that in the engine and primary, and got some Lucas 80/90 gear oil for the trans, and WIX filter as always.

I use Mobil 1 syn ATF with 4 ounces of Lubeguard highly friction modified ATF supplement. Do a search here on Lubeguard.

Smooth shifting, no cold start klank, zero comp wear in thousands of miles.

thats sorta my point. Our primary internals are simpler than an auto trans by far. I've ran ATF in my old Triumph primary for literally decades. It's very similar to what's going on inside the HD primary. I still may do ATF this change instead of the 20/50, I have a case of M1 Syn ATF in the shop after I put the Gear Vendor OD unit in my old truck.

Used Chevron dino Ford type "F" for years without a problem.
