Oil blowing out of hose beneath my shovelhead
#11
That was all it was just sittin, I guess. It isnt doin it now. I rode it around about a hour to take another good look at it. I changed the oil and filter and Im getn no oil out of that pipe. I have a fairly bad leak in the transmission main gear shaft. I m assuming the seal is shot. The oil in it I changed twice and it is foaming up turning a yellowish color. Any of yall ever heard of that? It will leak out about 4oz on a 1 hour test run then overnight it leaks about 2oz right below the drive gear shaft. If you can send me in the right direction for this problem I will appreciate it . Thanks again, BigNick

Yes- totally agree with the oil issue-my 92 did it every spring-now in the fall i take off the tank hose at the pump- stick a bolt in the hose with a hose clamp-and reconnect it in the spring No sumping into motor.Your trans leak - if its the mainshaft bearing seal- ive changed it- the primary system has to come off -are you sure the trans insnt filled-overfilled and venting out the case breather ?

I am fairly sure thats where its coming from. I put some fluorescent dye in the trans and rode it about hour or so. From looking with the black light it seems to be leaking rite below the trans shaft.I guess I am going to have to pull the primary and clutch to see for sure. It would be nice if it had a easy solution. Thanks for answering. B Nick

Hi! If you figure you have to change that big seal on the trans-i highly recommend getting a new rear sprocket spacer (there are a few variations of spacer- make sure you get the right part #) and also get a new o-ring for the spacer too (it seals against 5th gear). I tried reusing my spacer-and it f'ed up my new seal. They arent too expensive- jims and baker also make versions of the spacer. Up to you- but its a shitty job to do twice.

The only time my Shovelhead ever puked out oil from the breather hose was when there was too much oil in the tank. It sat on the lift for two months once while I did some overhauling and didn't sump oil when I started it.
If you haven't done so already take out the ball and spring and clean out the seat. If there's no debris in it get a new spring and ball, tap the new ball with a brass or aluminum punch to seat it then put it all back together and go.

Cleaned the seat replaced spring and bearing and havent had a drop of leaking since then. Works like a new one. My engine is still full of sludge. The previous owner really let that type of upkeep get away from him. Thanks again. Big Nick
