Transmission Oil issue, please help!
hello all,
I have a 2004 softail standard that was kept in winter storage. Prior to storage, bike oils were changed by myself and winterized. A few days after taking out of storage, I started my bike up on a cold morning (upper 30s). I ran the bike a day prior and had no issues. After starting on the colder morning, milky white fluid was leaking on the left side which appeared behind the chain case. After shutting of the bike, the fluid stopped dripping a few minutes later. I few days later, starting the bike on a warmer morning, no spills occurred. Assuming it was the primary due to the left side, I changed both the primary and transmission. The trans oil was the only milky white fluid. A few weeks after riding, the trans oil became milky again. No spills/leakage occurred since the original cold morning but water is still somehow getting in. Has anyone ran into an issue of this before were a one time leak and nothing since? Also how water still maybe getting into the trans reservoir? Could a primary gasket in the case allow water somehow to the other side of the bike? Thankyou for any assistance and safe rides,
Kevin

Transmission vent hose? How are you washing the bike? High pressure?

That sounds logical to me. Check that vent hose. Its really the only place it is open to atmosphere. Except for the clutch cable too-i guess water could get down that too (i doubt it). If you ARE washing your bike with high pressure (to each their own)-please avoid the vent hose!

Also, the vent hose outlet is near the backside of the inner primary if I'm not mistaken. When the bike is on the jiffy stand, it may appear as though fluid from the vent hose is leaking from the back side of the inner primary.
How much fluid are you refilling the transmission with after a drain?

Milky on an air cooled engine is definitely moisture. Only thing it could be is washing with too hard if pressure, or could be from letting it sit in a cold garage or shed for storage. Could have condensation. Change it all.

Same happened to a buddy who keeps his bike in a shed, it took flushing the trans and re filling it a few times to where it was acceptable. Metal is pourous to a small extent(ride a bike with a tan motor in the rain and see how it gets darker) and even condensation can cause this to happen. Really depends where you live though and the local humidity.
