need to change for the first time the transmission/primary gear oil of my sportster XL883L Superlow 2010. I ride it for about one year, with 4.000KM ride.
Here is my local dealer options:
- MOTUL HD 80W-90 (9€)
- MOTUL Motylgear 75W-90 (10€)
- CASTROL Universal Plus 75W-90 (15€)
- MOTUL Gear 300 75W-90 (17€)
- MOTUL Gear 300 LS 75W-90 (20€)
I read a lot about it here that some of this oils are made for automobiles and not suitable for the bike. That's my concern. For me i will go for the Motul Gear 300 LS.
Can you you please advise this younger rider to make the first maintenance right choice?
Thanks in advance. Best regards. Ride Safe.

Hello again,
thanks for the feedback.
PDB17UltraRG i do have the service manual. The only recommendation there is H-D Multi-grade and Screamin' Eagle Synth, only for engine. For that i already made the choice with MOTUL 7100 4T 20W-50.
I'm looking for a another great alternative that i can purchase here at my local dealer for the transmission/primary gear oil.
After started doing some more reading with help of mmesa005 links, i will be more careful with this unsafe GL-5 oils.
Thanks for your help! Safe ride.

Ok i did it!
After reading so many reviews and seeing so many youtube videos i gained courage and changed the engine and primary/transmission fluid.
Here in my country it's not easy to find Mobil 1 or Red Line gear oil. That were my first choice. I did manage to find the official portuguese Red Line distributor, but they only sell minimum 5 liters (5,29 quarts), almost 30€/liter (35USD/quart).
So, i decided to go with the Motul 7100 20W-50 for engine and primary/transmission. So many good reviews that say to go safe with the same good 20W-50 engine oil in the primary/transmission also, that i decided to take a chance. Motul claims that is a good solution for H-D gear box, and many HD owners saw the H-D authorized service going for that solution.
For the filter there is also not so many options here. To tell the truth the only option was HIFLO HF170B. I did notice that the round holes in this filter are a little bit smaller than the original HD filter. Lets hope it's ok. The filter was way too tight. It was impossible to take it out with the screwdriver technique. I lost a lot of time and effort with that. The proper tool for the filter is the best choice, i was forced to get one.
The engine oil came out with a dark brown/yellow color. The primary/transmission oil came out with a same color but a little brighter. The magnetic plug came out with a very few metal particles (30% of the top magnetic head).
In the final all went well. 1 quart (almost 1 liter) for primary/transmission. For the engine 2 quarts and a half. The oil filter filled with 150mL (0.160 quart) before twist in place.
I was supposed to be near the middle but it went a little high that i expected.
Engine started with 10 minutes to warm up and then a quick ride to see the results. A big difference changing gears, not so hard to shift was the first felling. Didn't hear or felt any change in the engine. Leaks checked, all fine. Straight back to the garage because of the heat wave here in Portugal with 45ºC (113ºF) and i think that is not good for our air-cooled bikes.
Sorry for the long post. Just to share my first good successful H-D maintenance experience. Safe ride to everyone!
