syn 3 and engine noise
Good evening all
Terry from Edmonton here. picked up an 08 ultra CVO just changed the oil and used the dealer recommended syn 3 20 50. since the oil change I have put 400 miles on the bike and the engine top end is making noises it previously had not made. I have no history on the bike but it was quiet before the oil change. Is this normal with syn 3?
Thanks
Terry

What does the owners manual recommend? I've never owned a CVO, so don't know if they have a different 'diet' for oils. The only bike I use synth in is my old Glide, simply because S&S recommends it for my 107" engine, I use dyno for all the other bikes.

Ive run a bunch of different synthetic motorcycle oils in my 08 cvo, so you'll be fine with any of them as long as it meets the standards...which I'm pretty sure any of them will or they wouldn't sell much. That being said I've noticed no difference in the racket that comes from my top end regardless of the brand of oil...or even dino oil. Is it possible that if you want back to your original brand that your motor will quiet down again??? It's possible but I wouldn't count on it lol. Honestly mine sounds like there's a couple nuts rolling around in there but I've pulled rockers, put in the lockers and checked the endplay and all that on the rockers but nothing jumps out so it just keeps chugging along. Definitely make sure you know the difference between a little top end noise and a lifter going bad on you because that's alot bad news.

By far the best oil I've tried when it comes to noise (and I've tried a lot) is Spectro 25-60 dino oil. Give it a try & see if that noise goes away

Iv always used syn 3 because that is what they recommend. The top end has always been noisy, so I thought Id try Spectro 25-60 Dino oil for this oil change that I did last night. The motor tic is not as noticeable, has a little more oil pressure. Im surprised on how Much quieter of the motor is.
