Default stick reading too much oil

I have a 2005 Dyna super glide 88 tc with 45,000 miles on it. I decided it was about time to check/replace the chain tensioners. I thought it would be a good idea to upgrade to a high output oil pump while I was in there. (when I overhaul my truck motors I always go back with a Melling high output oil pump and have good results). I also replaced both inner and outter chains with the new quieter chains. Also I replaced the breathers with the new fangled Harley breathers bought over the counter at the dealership.

Now here's the problem, I took it out for a test ride and it started to overheat (oil tempt. 250*) So i pulled over and checked the oil level. It was reading twice as high as it should be. I got it home and let it sit. Checked the oil level again and it was still twice as high as normal. So I decided that I had over filled it and fired it up to warm up and drain. After about 10 min. I shut it off and pulled out the stick to start draining and it was reading where it should be, normal. I drove it for 30 miles or so and checked the oil level several times and it stayed at normal level but oil still overheats to 240*, normal is around 221*as I have an after-market oil cooler. What went wrong ?

Sounds like the Oil Pump isn't aligned properly.

OK I'll try and realign it. I had read an article about realigning the oil pump and wondered about it

You need to use the alignment tools for the oil pump alignment, the SM gives the exact breakdown of how to accomplish this.

My goal oil level is between add and full. If you’re oil is above full you had oil in the bottom of the motor. No where else to hide the oil.

Agree,
Typical oil temperatures 2 up interstate on my 14 Road King are 250° Plus on hot 90 degree days.

Granted based on your post something with your bike changed.

Hey thanks for all the advise. Come to find out it was an improperly aligned oil pump. Here's how it all played out

1st attempt - tore it down and took the high flow oil pump out and went back with the stock Harley pump. Got the alignment tools and aligned it while spinning crank by hand. Buckled it back up and tested it. It was worse, oil stay at double full.

2nd attempt - I dropped the exhaust and cover plate and tried to just re-align the pump with alignment tools and turning the back wheel by hand. No improvement. Still reading twice as much oil as should be.

3 attempt - I stripped it back down and changed out the oil pumps. I went back with the high output pump. The alignment tools don't work with this pump. But this time I used the starter to turn the crank while I torqued the pump bolts. I put it all back together and I just got back from testing it. It worked. I went from reading too muck oil to reading a quart low. I filled it to 1/4 below full and I'll take it on a good road trip in a couple of days as it's 36 degrees out today and it'll rain tomorrow. But it looks like it's fixed. I guess turning the crank and turning a wrench was too much for me to do. Should've got the ol' lady to turn one. Thank you all very much.
