My city has a place where you can take it and dump it into large barrels.

Several auto parts stores have an oil dump for their customers. AutoZone near my house will let any customer dump up to 5 gal a day free.

My city "public works department" has a nice big oil container for us "tax payers" to dump our used motor oil. There are a couple of garages around that advertise free oil drop off service too...

A friend has a garage that has a heater which burns used oil and he is always happy to take mine. Pour my oil into the oil pan and then into old liquid laundry soap containers so all I have to do is drop off the containers.

Well there is this section of protected land near where I live and since no one is allowed out there I figure that's about the safest place to dump it, oh yeah oil filter too but I do bury that.

Too funny Deus Ex Machina .....( I hope you are kidding though)

Thanks for planting the idea guys.
Just called my local Automotive store (Canadian Tire), they have a red box out side their garage where anyone can deposit used oil.

I used to put mine back into the empty bottle, then pitch it over the fence into the neighbors yard. But he started pitching it back. So now I put it in a ziplock bag.

All joking aside, I burn it in my backyard incinerator.

Kinda funny story from about a year ago....Last Halloween at about 9 pm, I get a knock at the door. Figured it was some late trick or treaters. I go to the door and look out. The first think I though was, "Damn, those are some big kids and they sure got some real looking firemen costumes." Well, it was the fire department. They said they had been out for hours looking for a natural gas leak. They told me they had tracked it to my block and thought it may be coming from my street. First, I told them we don't even have gas service in my neighborhood, even though I quickly put 2 and 2 together and knew what they were smelling. One of them came around the house and I knew that he knew the source, so I told 'em..........I had put about a gallon of gear oil in the stove earlier in the day. It had burned and was still smoldering. The sulphur in the oil was kind of laying low in the air and had stunk things up pretty good. It sure did smell like a gas leak. After that, I knocked of burning the gear oil and stuck with just burning motor oil.
