primary oil mistake......
Hey, short time lurker here and my first post so don't hurt me........words can be more painful sometimes \\; If I read correctly some run the amsoil 20-50 in the oil/primary and severe gear 75-110 in the transmission. \\; I have accidently put the 20-50 in the oil and put the severe gear in the primary and transmission for the 1000 mile service...... any chance of doing harm or think it will work for the summer riding long as it stays warm?? \\; I appreciate any opinions and/or suggestions.

I would drain the SVG out of the primary because of the limited slip additives in it and the possibility that it could cause your clutch to slip. Get a quart or 2 of inexpensive type F atf and flush it out for 25-50 miles then put the 20w50 in the primary.  \\;\\\\\\;The detergent in the atf should clean all the gear oil out of there. But don't wait. The SVG is for the trans only. 20w50 for the engine &\\; primary.

I wouldn't change it just yet.....it maynot bother a thing. I would at least try it in the primary before dumping it....if it does cause the clutch to slip or other problems...then I would try it.

The primary can take almost any kind of fluid with no ill effects.

There is probably a high moly additive count in that gear oil. Not good for wet clutches. IMO

I doubt if it will hurt a thing.

Most guys I know that own Sportsters (including myself and a couple of Harley dealer mechanics that are good friends) run Mobil 1 75W-90 synthetic gear lube year around in the \\;primary/tranny, which unlike the big twins share the same fluid.
 \\;
Some of these Sportsters have a lot of miles on them (65,000+ miles), and no one that I know has had any slippage or wet clutch related problems.
