A little worried
So I was doing my end of season oil changes on my softtail, and as I went to twist on the oil scavenger puck I noticed what looked like some of the bottom end engine sealent (gasket material) were the two halves of the engine mate just under were the filter goes slightly oozed out. Is this a big concern or did a little hot oil just cause some of it to expand out of the crack? Thanks in advance

Probably nothing; just take a gander at it every now and again.

Just sloppy manufacturing. Too much was applied. Just think, you have the same thing inside the engine, as was in my case. Came out in the oil filter. This sealant is old school and some day the MoCo will discover Loctite 515. This stuff won't set until the halves go together and any squeeze out can be washed off with WD-40. I just pushed the excess at 90 degrees to the case split and it sheers off flush to the case. Only the stuff between the case halves is doing any sealing anyway.

Blame it on the dealer.

Well my mind is at ease. It was never there before and I've had the bike two years now, so it just got me thinking what is going on. Thanks for the replies.

Don't worry because:
1. They all do that 2. That is normal 3. There is no extra charge for the extra sealant applied to your bike by the moco 4. Any removal of sealant not done by a factory authorized Harley Davidson dealer technician can void your warranty 5. WARNING: Removing excess sealant from your motorcycle can cause SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH Any questions? :D |
What if there is more inside the cases, I have found the oil filter clogged with the stuff.
