Oil blowing out of hose beneath my shovelhead
This is a 76 shovelhead that is new to me. I bought it end of last summer and started doing touch up work. I drained the oil tank and it had about a inch of sticky sludge in it which I cleaned out. It ran really well with new oil and filter with no leaks, to speak of. I rebuilt the carburetor and today cranked it up. I ran it for a minute then shut it down. There was a huge puddle of oil on the floor. It wasnt doing it when I parked it in December. I put a quart and a half oil back in tank and cranked it up and looked under engine and there was a hose with small amount of oil splattering out of it and small amount of smoke. What does it sound like my problem might be. Thanks for your help.

You don`t have a problem.
When the bike was sitting, oil in the tank found it`s way down to the crankcase (it snuck past the check valve).
When you fired it up, the pump couldn`t scavenge the excess oil back to the tank so it just blew out the breather hose.
Any model bike that has an oil tank mounted higher than the crankcase can do this.
On the other hand, it it barfs out oil every time you start it, there is a problem.

I read a 7yr old post that I should buy 2 check ***** and a new spring and take the old parts out. Then drop a new ball in and give it a tap to reset the ball seat. Then take that ball out and put the other new un hammered ball and new spring in it proper place and that would take care of the oil problem. Is there any way you have heard of to flush out my engine crank case. I have a feeling there probably is sludge in the bottom of it.Thanks for your help.

You are looking for something to be wrong...
As long as the breather does not blow oil out every time you start the engine, you do not have a problem.
I explained to you why the oil came out the breather hose.

I had a 71 electraglide and rode it for years with no blowing out of hose on bottom. I was concerned with this one doing this. Thanks for your comments and your opinions.

when shovel heads sit for extended periods of time they will puke oil out of the breather, if they're used on a regular basis they won't puke oil. it's as simple as that. i don't think dan was giving you an opinion, he was giving you facts.
